Not Just Venues, a Source of Christmas Present Ideas too!
We are hoping that the credit crunch won’t affect Moon Bears this Christmas!
For anyone racking their brains about presents, our designated charity this year, Animals Asia Foundation, are displaying their unusual and good value presents at Christmas fairs being held throughout the country, and all proceeds will go towards the Moon Bear rescue.
The fairs will take place at:
* London: Chelsea Animal Charity Fayre, 22 November, 10-4.30pm,
Chelsea Old Town Hall, Kings Road, London, SW3
* Musselburgh: Christmas Fayre, 29 November, 12.15-4pm, Musselburgh
Town Hall
* Barrington, Cambridgeshire: Barrington Christmas Fayre, Animals
Asia teddy tombola and cake stall, 29 November, 9am-4pm.
* Bolton: Mayor’s Christmas Fayre, 29 November, Bolton Town Hall,
BL1 1SA
* London: Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre, 30 November, 10-5pm,
Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, W8 7NX,
* Newton Abbot: Victorian Christmas Evening, 3 December, 6pm-9pm,
Queen Street, TQ12
* Dunster, Somerset: Dunster by Candlelight, Fri/Sat 5 and 6
December, 5pm-9.30pm
* Exeter: South West Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre, 6 December,
10-5pm, Exeter Corn Exchange, George St, Exeter, EX1 1BUl
* Ipswich: Christmas stall, 6 December, Buttermarket Shopping
Centre, IP1 1DT
If you can’t attend any of the fairs, you can check out the Animals Asia Christmas catalogue at www.animalsasia.org/xmas08/giftshop/php. As well as necklaces, soft toys, keychains, coasters etc, I can personally vouch for the t-shirts, woolly scarves and environmentally friendly bags, all of which have been widely admired. In particular, my fella looks so fabulous in the Animals Asia t-shirt that more are on order!
You can even bring your gifts over to our Christmas Wrapping Event at Cavendish Conference Centre on 11 December from 6 pm, when they can be beautifully wrapped by our wrapping expert while you enjoy a festive drink or two (RSVP:party@cavendishconferencevenues.com)

Half Moon
I am, it has to said a bit sad - I love adverts. There is nothing better at times than a good commercial break. I discuss them with friends from both home and abroad. My not so recent favourite the Jaffa Cake advert “Full moon, Half moon, Total eclipse”
At America Square we have Half Moon Tables, now before you get concerned we don’t have termites or woodworm. We bought them that way. The team at Cavendish Conference Venues feel that when you want Cabaret why should you have a third of a table taking up space when it is not required as nobody wants to have their back to the action. The general consensus from clients is that it is a fantastic idea. Mine is that if they had have come in whole and they were indeed Jaffa Cakes what fun we would have had eating them to get them to Half Moons.

United Nations
It’s a funny old business how widespread we are in this the conference world!
Last week we had a speaker at the Cavendish Conference Centre who ran through a fantastic presentation on Climate change! Everythging went swimmingly well as it always does at the Cavendish thanks to our wonderful AV team.
That person went to the United Nations headquarters to present exactly the same presentation at a Conference for 2000 people but alas things were not good in the power house of the UN Headquarters! The speaker announced to the deleagtion that the Technology team should pay a visit to the Cavendish Conference Centre in London and learn a thing or two form the illustrious and hard working Richard Young, a man amongst men in the AV world, about how a Presentation should work!!
How good is Richaard then one asks?? The answer is you will have to book an event and find out!!!

Dilly Dally
Wouldn’t it be great to be able to just chill out and let the world just wander by? I don’t think so…..no matter what we say it just isn’t like that in this day and age, the husstle, the busstle and the sheer adrenalin of living and working in a masive City such as London is GREAT!! Indeed to have the pleasure of working with professional people such as those at Cavendish Conference Venues makes going to work such a pleasure so who would have the ‘Chill Out Factor’ when we can come to work at the best Conference Centres in London!!!

Long Service Awards
I suppose in thanking people for their dedication we should also recognise the fact that
Rachel Applegate has been with the company 13 years now. Tom Mayers has also been with Cavendish Conference venues for 13 years, Gill Fitzgerald has been with us 11 years, unoficcially, Dermot Waldron 8 years, Lina Lai for 5 years and Olga Barro is in her 3rd year. Ros De Vekey and Sarah Everard are still in nappies and have been with us 3 months so they have a bit of catching up to do as does Denis Hickey who is coming up to his first year anniversary in January 2009!
One can’t forget the likes of Kathy Prest who has been part time now for 9 years and Denise Cheyne has worked at the Cavendish Conference Centre, on and off, for the past 20 years too! The wonderful Stoyan, has contributed to the success of our Operations for 8 years now!
All I want to say is THANK YOU to all the afore mentioned people and here’s to the next 20 years!

Service Gratitude
One always wonders after starting a new job as to how long you will survive in the job, how will you like working with the people and how will the commute be amongst other things!
Luckily enough here at the Cavendish we have the pleasure of one man, Richard Young, who has been the technician at the Cavendish Conference Centre, on and off, for the past 20 years! It goes to show that not only has Richard got the staying power but he is also extremely good at his job and a pleasure to work with.
Thank you Richard for all the years of hard work and dedication to the Centre.

Coming to a screen near you…
In spite of never having been a big fan of Kenneth Brannagh I really can’t wait to watch Wallander, a new TV series starting this month, where he plays a Swedish police inspector.
No, I haven’t developed a sudden interest in Irish actors or a love for Scandinavian crime novels, no. The reason I’ll be watching this series with such interest is that scenes for one of the episodes were filmed at the ICO’s Boardroom. Last spring a BBC crew spend several days shooting in the Boardroom and I’m just curious to see what is the result of those long hours of work.
I know television is all ’smoke and mirrors’ and its magic makes the grimiest place look like a palace but it’s also true that they make nice places look literally astonishing, so I want to see what they have been able to do with such a beautiful and atmospheric room as the ICOs Boardroom, my favourite meeting room in the ICO building.

Well it goes without saying that we at Cavendish Conference Venues must be one of the most progressive small companies in London on the afore mentioned issues!
What with our contributions for this Christmas towards the Moon bears Foundation and our composting of all our waste food at the Cavendish we are doing our very best to save the planet! People in the Conference buyers sector of our business should PLEASE take note and book us so we can do more which is what we really really really want to do!

Animals Asia Foundation/Jungle Book
This year, Cavendish Conference Venues are supporting the terrific work of Animals Asia Foundation, which rescues endangered Moon Bears from inhumane bile farms in China and Vietnam. Full details of their work, including a riveting blog by Jill Robinson, the founder of Animals Asia, can be found on www.animalsasia.org.
At our venues, you will find flyers detailing “A Christmas Treat not to be missed”. This is an opportunity to join Jill Robinson MBE and Virginia McKenna OBE at the Birmingham Stage Company’s acclaimed adaptation of The Jungle Book, which will take place on 22nd December at the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, 15 Gordon Street, London WC1. (Booking line 020 7388 8822). In these credit crunch times, we can feel good by treating friends and family to this special performance, as all profits from the show and after-show auction will go towards helping to rescue, rehabilitate and care for the Moon Bears.

Cavendish and the Credit Crunch
In the current climate doesn’t it reall miff you off when the likes of the press, the media, the politicians and all those crazy publicity seaking dunder heads go on and on and on and on and ….. yes ON about the fact we could be heading towards a recession, money is scarce and YES the financial situation is dire????
Lets just get on with life and keep our heads down and accept we are in a FINANCIAL CRISIS but to get over this turbulent time we must persevere with what we all specialise in and know best- work!

Wired for sound….
You’ve experienced it before, probably on more occasions than you care to remember. The lips are moving but there’s little audible sound because the sound system is akin to something made from double sided sticky tape and squeezy bottles. Yes I know I’m showing my age, but seriously - is this what you expect from a professional conference venue company.
We didn’t think so.
It’s not as if you can stand up in the middle of a conference and ask the speaker to speak up, tempted as you may be and by the time it gets to the coffee-break you’ve missed a chunk of the conference.
At America Square in the main conference room – The Ludgate, seats up to 200 delegates theatre style and 120 Classroom and Cabaret Style. It boasts a superb sound system with speakers around the entire perimeter of the room so that wherever you are, you will be able to hear everything that you want to.
If you didn’t hear everything or can’t remember you probably fell asleep. All may not be lost though as we offer MP3 recording of conferences which the organisers may have requested.

If you would like to visit to coo or admire, please feel free to give us a call on 0207 706 7700 or drop us a line www.enquiries@cavendishconferencevenues.com or indeed even to congratulation the proud parents…who are exhausted!

Blowing Raspberries!
Saffron, lime, peppercorn, cinnamon and melon, the list is endless. You would think that we are talking of the ingredients for our fayre at America Square our new conference venue, which opens on Monday the 29th September.
We’re not!
Why they name fabric after food is beyond me, normally putting these two together is not a good thing and then involves trying to separate the two – we can highly recommend from our 12 years of experience in hosting conferences www.ask.co.uk “how to remove ….. from …..”
We’ve discussed, we’ve debated, we’ve challenged, we’ve raised our voices till they were very loud indeed, we’ve thrown our toys out of the pram and stamped our feet until they hurt. Incidentally, if you happen upon our fluffy grey bunny (you’ll recognise it by it’s chewed ear and missing eye) we miss it terribly. Please can you send it back to us.
Finally we’ve come up with Raspberry, yes RASPBERRY!
Our aim was modern, contemporary, fresh and appealing. Our rebellion against the bland and the anonymous. At Cavendish Conference Venues we’ve always bucked the trend and ploughed our own course. We hope you agree with our choice, if not let us know.

Wall light
They say with age, you need more careful lighting to appear at your very best. If you are part of the original London Wall, you need serious help!
America Square Conference Centre is built around this historic feature and if you are using the Ludgate, Cornhill or Walbrook rooms it stands proud for all to see. To make it even more appealing to the eye we’ve installed LED lighting to bathe it in light of many colours.
This isn’t just any wall, it’s part of the original London Wall. This isn’t just any wall light, it’s a multi-coloured, led wall light. The colour choice for the light, well, that’s up to you.

How Are You?
Dermot, one of our directors has just got back from New York, which he said was fantastic. They really know how to do service he said; however they are a bit behind on sincerity. After an hour he had got a little tired with being asked, “how he was” when the questioner really didn’t want to know.
Having spent 7 months in the past I had this experience but countered this minor irritation with listing my woes, those of elderly relatives and even some I made up to maximise the effect. Watching the shock on people’s faces was priceless and then to finish it off the killer retort… “ You were asking how I was, weren’t you?”
If this were Ireland you’d be asked the question if the reply was “fine”, “good” or “okay” the question would be repeated, this time though, it would have a “really” tagged on for greater effect, as in “How are you really?”
At Cavendish Conference Venues we are well versed in the three S’s, Slick Service with Sincerity. When we ask a question we really want to know the answer and want you to enjoy the experience from start to finish.
Just what you need to have a nice day…….Really!

No need to be SAD
Well, the seasons are a changing - you can get that damp and slight chill in the air in the evening.
It’s no longer bright first thing in the morning when all of us at Cavendish Conference Venues are up and out, bright eyed (ish) and bushy tailed ready to greet the day and the organisers, speakers and delegates at the day’s event.
Though the hours of light may be dwindling as we approach…winter. We can at least offer you bright, light and cosy surroundings so at least when you are with us there’s no reason to miss the light!

Green builders
I have to say, a green builder is something I have never, ever thought would be seen on our beautiful planet not to mind Central London and not to mind at either of our 2 new, being constructed as we speak, Venues namely America Square and the Hallam Conference Centre’s!! It sounds like the next saga of the “Incredible Hulk” with our foreman Turning up half naked and painted all green!! Well I suppose he would not be out of place at the moment anyway!! Green Construction is currently ‘in progress’ at both venues with opening dates as 29th September in the City and early January 2009 in the West End!!
Come on the greens!!! (One could pretend we are all Paddy’s but really there are only the 2 of us!!Paddy’s that is!!!)

HBAA and the future
The up coming HBAA Forum at a renowned Heathrow Hotel is the occassion when partners- us the venues- and the members- the agents- come together and have discussions on the future of our industry!
It is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to air our opininons and make ‘promises’ on how we support each other now and the future!! The important thing as I see it is Conference Venues and Agents are integral to each others success and we should support each other to maintain a healthy and profitable future! The small agents and small Venues are the one’s that may be suffering most at the moment and now is the time to pay up commissions on time and for agents to support Venues when it comes to ‘visits’! To me we pay commission (in many cases prior to receving payment from the clients) swiftly as long as there are no queries and so it should be up to agents to try to ‘open’ their doors to us more! Most agents do welcome Venues but there are a few and they are Members!!!!

Visit us on stand G35 at Square Meal Exhibition - 17/18 September (www.venuesandevents.co.uk)
Visit us at the Square Meal Exhibition at Billingsgate on the 17th & 18th September, quite apart from the fact that we are there, obviously brilliant news, truly exceptional people, perhaps the most outstanding group of venues anyway. Leading the way and the day with Green Initiatives and sustainable policies. Leaving that aside what we really want to know what is Old Billingsgate like, is it true the basement is still full of ice, just left over from the old fish market days, as you walk around do you pick up the delicate aromas of first cod then place. Come and visit here about our fantastic 5 venues, and pick up a truly outstanding goody bag. www.venuesandevents.co.uk

Green Tourism Assessment
Today’s the faithful day of our Green Tourism assessment www.green-business.co.uk
Not quite sure what to expect, to date we have had one previous visit from Green Tourism, they gave us a few pointers, unfortunately the chap who came then has now left so now we have a new assessor, hopefully he will pick up where they previously left off. The other problem is that looking through their check list quite a few of the questions are not really relevant to us i.e. we get scored for things like information on cultural heritage initiatives etc, we are a business to business venue so not really relevant, anyway it’s a start so that matters.

Adam’s Ale
Our granny always extolled the virtues of Adam’s Ale. From the time we were knee high to a grasshopper upwards. She didn’t worry about how many units the Government recommended as your daily intake or weekly intake it was always drink until you’ve had your fill. Now before you start being concerned, with her being Irish and a pub landlady to boot, Adam’s Ale is water. I’m sure she’d be horrified with bottled water tainted by plastic, with a sell by date of 2 years, yet it’s been in the ground for centuries.
I’m sure that she would highly approve of Cavendish Conference Venue’s policy of serving Filtered Sparkling and Still Water included in our DDR packages in unlimited quantities.
Hmm! now how to get you to eat your vegetables and stay away from those biscuits and desserts!

O2 - Part Deux
Well, they showed the recording of the Kylie Minogue concert that I attended at the O2. Wow! what a difference to what I saw when I was at the concert and saw it live. I take it back she doesn’t look like a pepperami and there was a lot going on that I missed due to my vantage point in the gods.
At the Cavendish Conference Centre you too can have an mp3 recording* or even have a dvd recording* of your event and in this case remember all of the bits that you did see and did enjoy.
With Cavendish Conference Venues, what you see is what you get and what get, is exactly what you saw!
* Additional charges apply for MP3 recording or DVD recording.

When we get question like this!! What is a Green Venue?
Very Simple!
All administration etc must be done electronically - no paper!
an awareness of reducing the carbon footprint - can delegates arrive by public transport, are cars really necessary?
Try to recycle anything used at the venue like paper and try to reduce waste.
Using recycled paper on flipcharts, conference pads and pencil  for delegates to take note.
Choose a venue that has environmental issues as a top priority!!
 So click on  www.cavendishconferencevenues.com
We are in an environmentally concerned society and every little helps so lets all do our bit.

Morning coffee
Almost every day either an event organiser or delegate asks me why our building is called International Coffee Organization.
Well, I’m afraid there’s nothing mysterious behind that name, it’s actually a case of doing what it says on the can. Quite simply the building hosts the headquarters of an intergovernmental organisation that regulates coffee trade called -you’ve guessed it- International Coffee Organization (ICO).
As it happens, coffee is one of the most important traded commodities (if you ask me early in the morning, I would say it’s the most important…) so, even if not many people have heard of it, the ICO has an important role in world trade.
What all this means for us is that our venue has top quality facilities and, on a less practical but very inspiring note, quite often is perfumed with the wonderful aroma of coffee.

Well connected
My own experience as an event delegate has taught me that good transport links are an important addition to the appeal of a venue. It’s always good to know that you won’t be stranded in a solitary bus stop after the event or that you can change your travel plans at the last minute.
With the ICO being right in the heart of Soho you assume that there’s no shortage of transport options. To give you the full picture I’ve done a bit of research and here’s what I found.
As our location map shows, there are three tube stations (Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Rd and Oxford Circus) within a 600 metres radius of the ICO. These stations serve four lines that can take you to Paddington, Victoria, King’s Cross, Euston and Waterloo in less than 15 minutes.
If you prefer travelling over ground, Oxford Street, and the 10 bus routes in it, are just a two minutes walk from the ICO.
Car users are also well catered for, with two of car parks less than a couple of minutes away, and three other car parks within 500 mts. There’s also a Blue Badge Bay on the corner of Berners St. and Mortimer St.
And finally, getting a cab is as easy as crossing the street, because there is a cab bay right on the opposite side of the street.
Quite a complete range of option as you can see. The only thing that seems to be missing is a cycling lane, but with our mayor being a bike enthusiast himself, it surely is just a matter of time before we get one of those as well.

The Great Escape – but not for some!
You may be able to empathise with this if you are one of those left in the office while everyone else has gone on their summer hols with bucket ‘n’ spade or snorkel and mask in hand.
August is lovely in London everyone is gone, it’s supposed to be quiet!! Maybe there’s less of us but the phones and enquiries are coming in thick and fast. So to those of you left making these calls and giving us these enquiries we thank you!
You are making the time during which we miss our colleagues who incidentally will arrive back tanned and refreshed after having enjoyed their 2 week holiday go all the faster. So keep them coming…..Ă‚Â

Vertigo by O2 not U2
On Wednesday night due to the generosity of my friends I got the chance to take in the O2 Experience. What I wasn’t expecting was sheer terror.
Ă‚Â
The seats looked fine on the layout of the venue, we were in Block H Row U that should have been some indication of our location in the venue. The good news was we could see everything once we took our seats the bad news, well…. It took 15 minutes for the fear of falling and vertigo to subside and the sudden urge to ask for a safety belt. Kylie who I knew was petite was about an inch high on stage I measured her from our vantage point using my thumb and forefinger and on the tiny video screens as she is so slender looked like a mini pepperami dressed in gold lame. I told this to some clients who were in the Cavendish the next day and they said that this image would stay in their memory for quite some time being that Kylie Minogue and a small convenient meaty snack had never been put in the same sentence before.
Ă‚Â
Ă‚Â
Did I enjoy it, well no did I want to yes! The reviews have been universally 4 star, however that may have been for someone who could actually experience the show properly, there were times when it was good but on the whole I was not really impressed. Though in fairness to Ms. Minogue she can really sing live and shames a good many other artists who rely on pre-recorded tapes.
 ÂÂ
So what does all of this have to do with Cavendish Conference Venues – We guarantee you will not suffer vertigo no matter where you are seated in any of our venues and we will ensure that you can always see and hear what’s being presented.

TOM – E
Just like Pixar’s megastar robot WALL E, we at Cavendish Conference Venues have our own little defender of the earth. Tom Mayers, one of our directors who has been blazing the trail for the Environment since we began over twelve years ago. Now while he’s never going to win an Oscar, nor be huge draw at the box office, he has been rewarded with a Green Mark Award for his continued efforts. In fact in case you didn’t know, we were the first Conference Venue Company to be awarded it in the UK.Ă‚Â
Sometimes it good to have a bit of reality, when it comes to saving the planet!

The Key Ingredient to a Successful Conference – TOAST?
Ask any Conference Organiser what is the key factor to the success of an event and the answers will range from location, to facilities, hi tech audio-visual equipment to everyone turning up not only the speakers but the delegates too!
Yet, we suggest Toast! We believe that if the organisers are looked after, made comfortable on arrival in a sometimes unfamiliar venue that it contributes greatly to the mood of the day and if their spirits are high this will transfer to all of the other attendees. While a piece of bread that has been lightly toasted with a tea or coffee on arrival in reality will not make or break a conference it is both a welcome and a sign that you’re in the safe hands of a team that want your event to be a success.

Trains, Planes and Automobiles
Here at Cavendish Conference Venues we believe in looking after all of our clients whichever of our venues you choose to use be it - the Mayfair, Cavendish, ICO or our soon to be opened America Square.
If you are driving we’ll direct you to the nearest parking spot or car park and remind you that you need to pay the congestion charge.
We’ll help you to check in on line for your onward journey if by air or you can do it yourself on one of the free to use terminals at the Cavendish Conference Centre. If you need to print off your boarding pass we’ll help with that too. If you need departure times for your train, nearest tube station or any travel information just ask. Don’t blame us though, if the weather doesn’t hold.

Summer Holiday Pictures 2008
Pictures from the Summer Holidays 2008
We like to think that at the Cavendish we do things differently but always with style, humour and with a professional standard unknown to other venues which is why the ‘others’ are always chumping at our bit to catch up on us!! We would like to hear from you all after your holidays and I am offering a case of Champagne to the person that sends me a photo of themselves that is funny, stylish and ‘different’ but that specifically shows you have been ‘thinking’ of conferences during your break!!!
What a silly but easy challenge and a nice prize too!! All photos to Dermot@cavendishconference.com before the end of September 2008!!

Green Cavendish
Green is the colour and green is the way forward in this day of environmental awareness and our Cavendish Conference Venue’s are very very green! In fact we are so green that we are the only venue in the whole of the UK with a Green Mark! I could go on and on about being Irish and green is our national colour but then that would be digressing from the point and philosophy for the future in the Cavendish! We are concerned about the future and have always been even going back to the launch of our first venue the Mayfair Conference Centre in 1995 when we first installed our environment friendly policies!! Now that is a lot longer than most companies have been considering the environment but remember we were there first!!!!
We are opening two new Conference Centre’s in London in 2008 and both will be ‘Green’ ! We are putting in brand new air conditioning that will be carbon neutral and zero omissions!! We do and always will try so do use us!!!

CCV - Weather Forecast
If like us you are a bit puzzled by the following words, millibars, high-pressure, low pressure, areas of depression, isobars and weather fronts. You find yourself getting a bit dizzy by all these hand signals or are a little confused of whether you are in the north, south, east or west let’s make it easier for you.
At the fully air conditioned Cavendish Conference Centre in W1 the forecast is cool, clear spells all summer long…….

Celebrity spotting at the ICO
A couple of weeks ago we had glamorous Samantha Mumba at the ICO doing some filming in our no less glamourous Board Room.
This is not the first time we have stars and cameras in our premises as the ICO’s atmospheric rooms are a favourite of film and TV location managers and, for instance, earlier this year we had a crew shooting Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming BBC drama.
In fact, we at the ICO affectionately refer to the Board Room as the ‘James Bond room’ because its massive wooden circular table and spot lights make it look like the perfect setting for a SPECTRE meeting in one of 007’s movies.

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome!
LCD projectors, plasma screens, teleconference kit… at the ICO we can provide you with all those if your event requires them (as is increasingly the case in this digital age) but we can also provide you with something a bit less common that makes of us quite a special venue: our translation facilities.
Our main rooms are equipped with five translation booths and the relevant audio equipment to allow you to host events in up to five languages with simultaneous translation, all with top quality digital sound that can be recorded to any support.
All this may sound very cold and technical but is one of the reasons why I love working at the ICO, as it means that very often we host events where delegates come from every corner of the planet giving you the opportunity to learn all kinds of interesting things.

Summer
It seems summer is finally here.
Longer, brighter days are not just nice out of the office; they also make working at the ICO more enjoyable. The sunlight filtered through the windows gives the teak on the Council Chamber a warm glow making it even more comfy.
Summer also brings the buzz of people enjoying a pint after work outside the nearby pubs -which reminds you that summer is very short and you must make the most of it- and, as you can guess, with the ICO being right in the heart of Soho, there are plenty of nearby pubs to choose from…

The F Word
The F Word
Not a dirty word but sustenance. Though it may not seem like it from the weather - summer is on its way. In preparation we’ve got brand spanking new menus at the Mayfair Conference Centre and the Cavendish Conference Centre so take your pick. However just in case we’ll let you choose from our new Winter menus if you prefer, when it’s not so nice outside and you need some comfort food.Ă‚Â

Sitting Around
If we told you we were sitting around you’d think we were being lazy( ha ha ha)  well, to come clean we have been doing a lot of sitting around, but honestly it really has been all WORK WORK AND MORE WORK! We’re choosing chairs for our two new venues America Square and Hallam so we’ve been sitting on rather a lot of chairs of all shapes, sizes and very intrested colours over the past few months. The things we have to do for your comfort is all part of the service at Cavendish Conference Venues.

River Fleet
You do rember one of rooms at America Square Conference Centre is called The Fleet !
The River Fleet is the largest of London’s subterranean rivers. It rises from two springs on Hampstead Heath and direcetd into two reservoirs constructed in the 18th centuary, highgate and hampstead ponds. From the ponds the water flows underground for 4 miles to join the River Thames.
In the 1970s the river gave its name to a planned Underground Tube Line, which was to run alongside the route of the former river, but prior to opening in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, the name changed from the Fleet Line to Jubilee Line and the route changed.
So you now know the history behind two of our names rooms The Fleet and Walbrook at One America Square! If you would like to come along and see the origional wall please contract me.
Next week Lina, will be doing the posts, which will be fun and funky, so don’t forget to log on. I will be back soon with more histories !

Ward of Walbrook
After yeserdays fun blog, back to history today…yawn, yawn yawn.
The Walbrook River ( you do remeber we have a room named after this at America Square?) now runs completely underground and the only evidence above ground is the stream on a street called Walbrook, which runs parallel to its course. On the Street is a church called St. Stephen Walbrook, which origionally stood on the west bank of the stream, but was rebuilt around 1439 on the east side. In 1666 the church burnt down in the Great Fire of London and Sir Christopher Wren built a new church there in 1672 to replace it, which still stands. The historic London Stone, which would have been a highly important religious symbol in Roman as well as pre- Roman London, is also minutes from Walbrook, as is the present-day Bank of England. The Walbrook Conference Room at America Sqaure has a part of the origional wall !
Walbrook is one of the 25 wards in the city of London.

For hands that won’t do.
So shocked were we when we saw SJP of Sex in the City fame’s hands that we spilt our, skinny hazelnut mocha decaff cappuccino with an extra shot all over our brand new dVb 70’s style jeans and Uniglo t-shirt.
Eyes may be the window to your soul but it’s the condition of your hands that surely age you more accurately than carbon dating. With this in mind you’ll be pleased to know that the girls at Cavendish Conference Venues demanded hand lotion to be in every ladies restroom. It’s true behind every great company there’s some savvy women.
sometimes it’s the little things mean a lot.

EASTENDERS
If you read Wednesdays ‘blog’ you know the capacities of these conference rooms, so we are waiting for your conference bookings! The history however is far more interesting !
It is said that when Londinium fell into invading saxons in the late 6th century, all the british inhabitants were forced to live on the east bank of the Walbrook while the saxons would reside on the west. This ancient division endured as the east side - or East End- continued to suffer in poverty while the west side - or West End - flourished.
America Sqaure is the poor sister to the rich West End Venues, Mayfair, Cavendish, ICO and Hallam Conference Centres, so pick up the phone 0207 706 7700 and make an enquiry, we don’t want to repeat history and suffer in poverty.

Underground River
Yes, Cavendish Conferences Venues, has Underground Rivers at America Square Conference Centre. ÂÂ
The river played a key role in the Roman settlement of Londinium, the city know as London. It is thought that the river acquired its name from the fact it ran through or under the London Wall. The stream started in what is now Finsbury and flowed through the centre of the walled city into the River Thames, near to where Cannon Street Railway Bridge is now located, splitting the settlement in two. It was used for fresh drinking water and carrying sewage down to the Thames, plus used for transport with the dead of navigation.
Two of our seven conference rooms at America Sqaure Conference Centre are named after many of the “lost” rivers of London, the most famous of which is the River Fleet and the Ward of Walbrook.

Fifth Wall
Most buildings you will agree have four walls. America Square you will be pleased to know has the normal four - it helps to keep the ceiling up. Yet, our newest, soon to be opened venue has the added bonus of a fifth wall. Now while this fifth wall is an old wall, it’s not just any old wall - it is part of the original London Wall!

Location, Location, Location
As they say when buying a new house or opening a business the most important criteria is Location and Location and err…. Location. Cavendish Conference Venues have always taken this view, when we first opened our doors at the Mayfair and indeed later when we subsequently opened the Cavendish Conference Centre and the ICO. This time we’ve surpassed ourselves with our newest venue America Square opening in September. We are just two minutes walk from Tower Hill and Fenchurch Street stations. Well they do say practice makes perfect.Ă‚Â

Who wants to make a sale?
With more and more people tightening their belts and watching their money you would think that companies would be falling over themselves to follow up on sales enquiries. Not strictly the case we’ve been chasing up two potential suppliers for weeks now for them to call us but to no avail one of them 6 calls over two weeks. Maybe we’re not good enough, maybe they have enough business or that they have ceased to trade – I hope not!
In the case of our clients or prospective clients, at Cavendish Conference Venues we think you’re worth it, we promise to call you back at the earliest possible moment. Big or small enquiries we welcome one and all!

Hot in the City, Air-Conditioned at the Cavendish and Mayfair and ICO…
Taking the 94 bus home the other evening from the Cavendish Conference Centre I remembered why I hate when London heats up. Don’t get me wrong I’m all for sunshine and blue skies what I‘m against is having no real choice. Yes, you can use the tube or the bus to get home but there’s no real difference sweltering in a tunnel on the tube or baking on a bus whose heating system is on all year round it can’t be switched off - so as a paying customer you have no choice. Here at Cavendish Conference Venues all of our Conference Centres are fully air conditioned. Yes, the Cavendish, Mayfair and ICO Conference Centres are cool in summer and cosy in winter, as will our two new venues opening this year America Square and the Hallam. Your only dilemma - which to choose.
 ÂÂ
Now isn’t that a breath of fresh (cool) air!

Have you heard the one about the Four Conference Venue Companies in the one room all vying for business?
You’d think that when looking for sales by presenting to a conference agent that if you put four different companies in the one room it would be a bun fight, cloak and dagger or murder in the presentation room with a promotional branded umbrella. However this is not the case. If you’ve been following the blog so far you will know that Dermot Waldron of Cavendish Conference Venues has been spreading the word about our 3, soon to be 5 Conference Venues. What actually happened was co-operation, sharing and generosity. There was no fighting over the best spot, hogging the limelight or sabotage - we were like the little mice in Bagpuss putting the exhibition stand for one of the competitors who was pregnant ; calming the young lady who was new to presenting and fetching glasses of water for each other to ensure we were all hydrated. Yes, you can be competitive in business it doesn’t mean that you can’t be civilised. The young lady who was new to presenting even gave a lift to us - two stranded gentlemen to the train station when there was not a taxi to be found for love or money. Who ever said chivalry is dead or that it’s always the damsel who’s in distress.

Guess what??? We have agreed, finally, on a name and yes it has been a quantum leap for our Conference Centre’s and yes we will be calling ourselves :
“Cavendish Conference Venues”
Based on the strength of our marquee, Cavendish, this is the one to hold on to and we will now be under the one hat. All Centre’s notably the Mayfair, Cavendish, ICO, America Square and Hallam, when it happens, will be known as “Cavendish Conference Venues”!!
Now that’s a happy ending to a long saga!!!

Easter 2008

What a strange Easter this has been in 2008!! With schools closing down for the Easter week end and then opening and then closing two weeks later and some schools doing the traditional, taking holidays over the Easter period, others two weeks later, this has been a real mess!! Business’ must have suffered all over the country and certainly the Conference sector has because people are not available because holiday periods have covered a spanse of 5 weeks!! Outrageous when it really is only a 2 week break but so many have suffered….!!! The Government should/has to get it right in 2009 especially for small business’ that are reliant on the ‘people industry’!!!
Come on you lot shout out in upport of small business- Gordon get it right next year and the year after and after and after……………

The Luxury of London
The Luxury of London
Too many people nowadays are trying to escape what they call the ‘rat race’of London!
Why one asks and the usual answer is for a work life balance! A ‘work life’ balance in the country, well I have to say I am still trying to work that one out! Working in the Conference industry in Central London, under the auspice of Cavendish Conference Venue’s, there could not be on offer a better work life balance what with the relaxed and superb surroundings of different styles of properties and the professional and superb standards we offer! Life is great and London is a majic place to be and we love London especially the Cavendish Conference Venue’s!!

Blog 11 16/04/08 Expansion

April fools day has been and gone and ‘with all the will in the world’ we always seem to avoid catastrophies from any point of view and indeed if planning authorities are anything to go by then they must be ‘having a laugh’!! No clients rang to cancel their mega events and so another Fools day has been and gone and all is well!! Well, well that is not necessarily so…..!!
With our expected expansion in to opening a 4th and 5th venue in London i.e. Hallam and America Square we have a glitch!! Planners seem to want to convert listed meeting space into residential space even though, Yes I did say it is listed, all we are doing is cosmetically up grading the existing space, now what’s wrong with that you say??? Using an existing listed building for what it was built for in the first place now what is wrong??  Good question!! To turn a listed building into residential space one would have to do major construction works and this would have a massive detrimental effect on the area and on the building itself! We want to appease our clients and our neighbours by doing no more than using an existing space, bringing it up to date in current century standards and taking no more than 16 weeks to achieve this turn about!! Oh no no there is opposition to this and the local residents seem to want years of construction turmoil to a few weeks of gentle cosmetic up-dating and that’s before planning permission is even sought to turn it to a residential building and what building contractor would take on a listed building with internal restrictions???? Who am I to take on the might of the planning authorities being a simple Conference organiser????!! Why why why why why what what what what…..I just can’t get my head around this opposition to progress!!
It would be nice to be able to have a plan and be able to move forward knowing that there are future careers for some people but until we know where we stand with the planning authorities we can’t move forward to recruit and who ends up winning…??? Well I think we all know who ends up ultimately better off and that ain’t the conference centre !!!!
I have to say I am pleased that with our City venue, construction work has already started even though we only signed it on 5 months after our listed building!!!
And this is supposed to be progress !!!!!!
WE will open on time though that I am conviced of!

The Professional Conference Organiser
Consider this: A man/woman who is a real professional Business man/woman (let’s not be sexist!) and who have had a secretary or Assistant all their working life are suddenly put in a position of not having anybody to turn to (they are off sick or worse still all been made redundant!) to assist them with their forthcoming sales conference in London!! What do they do besides being totally helpless???
The obvious thing would be to ring the professionals at the Cavendish, Mayfair, ICO and Hallam Conference Centre’s and they will do everything to make it happen or they just might ring one of the wonderful Booking Agents throughout the country who then will ring the professionals at the Cavendish, Mayfair, ICO and Hallam Conference Centre’s!!! Well if they don’t they should!!!

Go, Go, Go and all steam ahead for the opening of The Hallam Conference Centre in July. This will be London’s newest yet grandest state of the art, unique Central London Conference Centre and yet another addition to the portfolio of the Cavendish, Mayfair and ICO Conference Centre’s, soon to be known as “CAPITAL CITY VENUES”!
The team are described as having a passion for the industry and by opening this, their 4th Venue in central London, show their enthusiasm with such flamboyancy and style that no other London Central venue can compare with the team of Rachel, Tom, Dermot, Olga, Lina and Denis at any level of professionalism. They in my estimation are the ultimate Conference Industry Professionals.

The Team
Dermot Waldron, Rachel Applegate, Tom Mayers, Line Lai, Olga Baro and Denis Hickey are a breed apart! An easy Life
We all crave an 2easy life however the Conference industry is not for the meek minded! Running the most successful small group of Conference Centre’s in the Centre of London involves long hours and TOTAL dedication to making these venues a success story which they are and have been for a long time but this is a drop in the ocean! To keep a team of dedicated and experienced staff for as long as we have at the Cavendish, Mayfair and ICO Conference Centre’s takes Management with exceptional motivational skills. Motivation from within helps drive oneself on the inside but also on the outside and keeps the dedicated team of operational staff at “Caapital City Venues” on their toes all the time aiming for heights other companies would be drowned in!

Conferences
To be a conference organiser is a hard and tedious task! I know a Central London organisation that takes the ‘hasstle’ out of the task of organising events! They are based at the newly created company “Capital City venues” otherwise fondly known as the Cavendish, Mayfair and ICO Conference Centre’s and soon to open the Hallam Conference Centre!
Based in the Centre of London along the hub of London notably Oxford Street these are venues that have class, style and the attitude of their staff to compliment such fine facilities! The technical state of the art audio and visual equipment is second to none and makes meetings, conferences, seminars and AGM’s a pleasure to hold at these unique City Centre venues!

Booking Agents
Conference Booking Agents are, to me, the bees knees! What would we do without them?? I love the idea of writing cheques to agents because it means they have given our Central London Conference Centre’s loads (hopefully depending on the size of the cheque!!) of business! That is why our small company incorporating the Cavendish, Mayfair, ICO and Hallam Conference Centre’s, soon to be known as “Capital City Venues” believes it is so important to spend time ‘on the road’ visiting the agents all up and down the country! I have been from Ulverston to Southampton, from Dublin to Grenwich and wherever there is an agent I have been! We promote the superb facilities of the Cavendish, Mayfair, ICO and Hallam Conference Centre’s to all and sundry from Aberdeen to Eastbourne and if you or you know anybody wanting to hold an event in London we are the people to talk to!

Spread the Word
We are trying to get the world to recognise that we are about to open the best conference centre in London. For the first time since we opened our first conference centre in 1985 we have hit the road. Up and down the country we are travelling visiting all who will have us boring no entrancing them with the full low down on our New Hallam Street Conference Centre. For us it’s thrown up a couple of key questions.
¼br /> What Bribe -           maybe bribe isn’t the right word inducement / sweetener might be better. Whatever you call it the dilemma is the same, do we take a little something to give the client or agent. We always do, I don’t know why, its one of those industry norms that we do because everyone else does. (put that way it sounds awful) We would look mean if we didn’t and so the whole trip would be counterproductive. Now we’ve got over that what to take. We have tried everything from advent calendars as large as a small child, to the ubiquitous magnum of champagne, our current favourite is a box set of Jo Malone Bath stuff. We thought that would wow the pants of them, it should do it costs a clean arm and leg, does it? Does it hell. So we’re back roughly to where we started tell us what would be the best the most memorable gift we could bring, ANY SUGGESTIONS will result in a visit and of course the thing itself (within reason)
¼br /> How to Get There -           I am writing this as I sit on the underground having just visited a top agent. Well to call it the underground is a misnomer it is the Metropolitan Line (that’s the purple one for the country life readers amongst us) but I am at least 45mins away from what I would call London somewhere near Watford. There is something about our company and car travel that just doesn’t seem to work. One of the first visits was made by my colleagues Gill and Rachel, by all accounts Gill developed a powerful allergic reaction to roundabouts, first she refused then violent sickness. Now its Dermot who has temporarily taken on the mantle of the Road Warrior. The problem, he will only travel by the train, huge logistical problems, and virtually impossible to see more than one person a day. At this rate to conquer the South East is going to take a lifetime. Maybe its because he has finally bought in to our industry leading Green Policy (se www.mayfaircavendish.com) I thought so but to speed things up we joined Zipcar.com the car club people. Both relatively green minded when compared to rail and in many cases more practical. Would he have would he hell? It looks like we are just going to have to grin and bear it, a bit like British Rail have to do with the painting of the Forth Bridge.
