Keep it Local

February 22nd, 2010

Having just spent a week in France I realize how jumbled up our environmental agenda is. On one hand we are seemingly ahead in the gimmick stakes, pencils made from recycled cups etc. On the other we are nowhere when it comes to some of the practicalities, free plastic bags at supermarkets etc. How does this relate to London conference centres and our desire to be London’s greenest venue. One key lesson from the continent is to keep our suppliers as local as possible.

Cavendish Conference Venues move to Smart meters

Cavendish Conference Venues move to Smart meters

We are installing smart meters at all our London conference venues for all our electricity supplies. This is part of our ongoing commitment to be as green / sustainable as possible. Smart meters are invaluable; they measure our electricity consumption far more accurately than conventional meters. We use the meter readings to check for electricity leakage and wastage, as such accurate meters will help us achieve our goal of a 20% year on year decline in electricity usage.

Cavendish Conference Venues announce two major Green Initiatives

February 5th, 2010

Cavendish Conference Venues announce two major Green Initiatives.

We have now moved all our electricity supplies from the Megalith that is EDF albeit on a green tariff (Carbon levy exempt) to Ecotricity. The logic is twofold. Firstly we prefer dealing with smaller companies, EDF professes to have somewhere over 100 000 employees, there is just no human face; it is all about systems and processes. Second, EDF produces both clean and dirty electricity, we prefer to buy from a company who are 100% focused on clean electricity, not an organisation with a foot in both camps.

We have moved our food waste recycling from Paper Round another ancient megalith with the customer service to match. To a much smaller organisation with a composting facility 20miles away from us, as opposed to the 100+ miles round trip the disaster calling itself paper round used. The savings in CO2 emissions are clearly fantastic.

Conferences & Accreditation – How can the green get greener?

January 22nd, 2010

There are as we all know a mass of accreditation paths ISO 14001, BS 8901, The Green Tourism scheme, hospitality climates, Green Mark etc etc.  While not massively expensive in themselves all of them are immensely time consumptive. We at Cavendish Conference Venues have tried to cut through this by offering a simple transparent target namely to be Landfill neutral We recognise that if every conference venue simply invented their own standard it would be impossible to compare one venue with another. So we at Cavendish Conference Venues i.e. Mayfair Conference Centre, The Cavendish Conference Centre, America Square Conference Centre, Hallam Conference Centre and the ICO Conference Centre are now committing to introduce BS 8901 across the whole group.

Londons Greenest Venue ?

January 15th, 2010

Having won gold in the Visit London sustainable awards we are Cavendish Conference Venues www.cavendishconferencevenues.com are taking our commitment further:

  1. Fully traceable menus. At the moment we offer as standard full tracebilility of all meat on all menus, we source from one named farm in Kent. We are now rolling this out to all products across our venues; we can offer menus with source details for all ingredients. We have used this to offer truly verifiable locally sourced menus.
  2. Car Sharing, we are setting up a system whereby we offer all delegates free of charge a forum to facilitate car sharing to and from the venue.
  3. At our America Square conference centre http://www.cavendishconferencevenues.co.uk/city-conference-venues we are offering state of the art webcasting facilities at cost. This takes our policy of bringing the venue closer to the client one step further.
  4. Finally our Cavendish Conference Centre http://www.cavendishconferencevenues.co.uk/west-end-conference-venues we are the first possibly the only and undoubtedly the best landfill neutral venue in Central London. We are now taken this one step further by further localizing our composting site, in 2009 it was 65km form us we now use a site 43km away.

Cavendish Conference Venues – fully traceable menus

January 7th, 2010

Eagle eyed focus on food quality. Full traceability to a named herd for all meat. Calorie Counts on all menus, Organic Menus, specific menus showing full traceability of all ingredients.  Menus guarantying locally produced ingredients.

Perhaps because of this we at Cavendish Conference Venues have won the mandate to host  major new conference is set to whip up new inspiration for developing and marketing foods for children, taking into account current trends, nutritional needs, and the hard business sense.

Children represent a high potential market for food manufacturers. Although many kids are picky-eaters who are keen on trendy foods with appealing packaging or marketing messages, they do have specific nutritional needs to help development and learning.

For food manufacturers aiming at this niche, it is a challenge to develop products that children want to eat, and parents and carers are prepared to buy.

At the same time, childhood obesity is a pressing concern as some 55 per cent of boys and 70 per cent of girls are predicted to be overweight or obese by 2050. The food industry has been roundly criticised for marketing of products that are high in salt, sugar and saturated fat, and are of questionable nutritional value, to children.

Even though some manufacturers have pledged more responsible marketing for products intended for youngsters, some campaigners believe more action is called for – and even regulation.
