Hosted at the ICO’s International Confernce Centre in the middle of Londons West End, this event showed how extreme savagery took away the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi people and exposed the visciousness of Saddams reign.

The three day event has been supported by the British Government and was well attended on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and many attendees from the Diplomatic and Iraqi Community in London.

Cavendish Conference Venues supported this Humanitarian Event by providing superb facilities including built in translation equipment to accommodate the multi denominations that were in attendance and are delighted to have been a part in exposing to the World how so few can do so much harm to so many!

The foothills of the technological mountains we will climb in 2012 were approached by Cavendish Conference Venues last week when we hosted a 3 day investor’s conference for the world’s largest advertising network provider. Easily summated were the hundreds of delegates all of whom needed wireless access at all times, our new SDSL lines dedicated to individual conferences (rather than shared by several difference conferences on any day) shrugged off the challenge. Our brand new secure webcasting solution was accessed by several hundred on the day; over 90 remote users’s submitted questions via hand held devices. More challenging, simultaneous interpretation. Difficult, the menu where every item had to show detailed sourcing information, UK sourced products for fruit bowls in January, nightmare!

Truly London’s leading venues for high Tec conferences, webcasting and organic, as the golfer might say hole in one.

Most of the time in our job we are surrounded by positive vibes like the glamour of the fashion week related events, the creativity of TV producers who attend the RTS monthly events at Hallam or the willingness to learn of delegates taking part in one of the many training sessions we host through the year.
Every now and again though,a conference comes along that makes you think about horrible things that are also part of our live in this planet.
This was the case last week at the Human Rights in Iraq Conference taking place at the ICO.
The terrible images of attrocities and chemical warfare and genocide victims, it makes you realise how lucky we are in our part of the world and one can’t help but feel admiration for the attendees who having gone through all this still have the energy and the will to try to make a better world.

The View From Here – as seen by Bobby, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and General Dogsbody, CCV South West Regional Office

A Delicate Matter

I hesitate to address this subject, but it has been troubling me for some time.

CCV SW Office Representative, with whom I share a home, has the most unfortunate habit of picking up my poo in a plastic bag. Well, really, what can I say? The look I give her ……. Sometimes I feel quite embarrassed being seen out with her.

Is this kind of person suitable for office life, I ask myself? There is no knowing what she might do next. Heaven knows what other dark habits she may be hiding ….. and to think, sometimes she leaves me behind in the SW office to travel for operational duties at the hub of Cavendish Conference Venues in London. (Incidentally, I protest about these visits long and hard). I think the wisdom of allowing her to set foot in the illustrious venues is something that the Big Boss and his fellow directors should think seriously about. Is it prudent to allow someone like this to interface with conference organisers and delegates?

Mind you, they do say that the tone of an organisation is set at the top, and perhaps SW Rep is trying to emulate the Big Boss. I heard her regaling one of her (few) friends with an account of the time when Big Boss was walking his children to school along Holland Park Avenue, accompanied by his charming dog, Santa, when Santa did a poo on the pavement. Finding himself without a plastic bag, Tom whipped off his sock and scooped up the poo in it. He would have walked away from it, he said, but for the fact that he was being observed by the mother of one of his children’s classmates. The SW Rep says that Tom clearly displayed here exactly the kind of lateral problem-solving thinking that demonstrates why he is the Boss of a thriving Conference Centre Empire, and she is merely a humble regional employee.

PS. I’m glad to report that Tom did not put his sock back on again.

PPS. Sometimes I think that I should look for a more desirable home. Any offers?

PPPS. I’m told that I look rather fetching in my new red waterproof/windproof jacket, and will soon be posting a photo of myself wearing said jacket (well, just as soon as SW Rep works out the technology to do so). Watch this space! Big Boss has instructed SW Rep to get the CCV Logo printed on it.

Luckily enough and, as he is such a generous person, he is doing it all out of his own pocket, how brilliant for us?? No don’t ask for cheap Chinese products to bring back as Tom has already asked him to bring back 000’s of Chocolate Ice Creams!

UK Uncut invaded a conference where Dave Hartnett was speaking to ‘thank’ him on behalf of Goldman Sachs and Vodafone.

The protestors, dressed as executives, entered the LexisNexis Tax Journal conference in the City of London, while the HM Revenue & Customs permanent secretary for tax was speaking. They handed him bottles of champagne and flowers, saying “we love you Dave” and started singing “for he’s a jolly good fellow, and so say Goldman Sachs”.

UK Uncut protestors (pictured at the event, above) were then ushered out of the America Square Conference Centre.

Hartnett has appeared before the Public Accounts committee to explain why the Exchequer lost up to £10m when agreeing a deal with Goldman Sachs.

University College London student Katie Clarke said: “Dave Hartnett signed off Vodafone’s £6bn tax dodge. That money could have prevented not just the cuts to higher education, but all of the cuts in public services over the past year. If Hartnett had a shred of self-respect he’d resign immediately.”

An HMRC insider said”It wasn’t so much a storming of the stage, as a light rain. Dave has no problem with peaceful protest so long as it is well informed and this wasn’t.”

Chris Jones, director of tax markets at LexisNexis, said: “The UK Uncut protest at the Tax Journal Conference was good natured and done in a spirit of fun. Dave Hartnett did not leave the stage and once the protesters had left the room, Dave continued to make his speech outlining how HMRC tackles corporate tax avoidance. It is a pity that the protesters had not asked if they could listen to his speech as they may have found more things to agree with than disagree with.”

In this day of austerity and public spending cuts it is outrageous that the Financial Services sector continues to pay huge bonuses! However I would imagine that only a certain % of these High Flying Bankers are benefitting from these bonuses and with every economy in a recesssion there will always be people who will benefit no matter what! It is, however, audacious to think of the extremes of these benefits considering in the Financial services that, in the main, they are owned by the tax payer!
We as humble tax providers in Cavendish Conference Venues have been trying to provide our clients with a ‘way out’ in that we have reduced our rates, in some situations, to where we were when we opened one of our venues on the 10th September 2001!! Charging rates taht were in place over 10 years ago considering the cost increases is incredibly generous of us and, to me, very loyal! We see clients have issues and we want and try to help! There aren’t too many companies out there with the same ethos as we have at Cavendsih Converence Venues!
