Twitter what’s the point

Could someone tell me the point of tweeting? Obviously I am missing the point. It seems to me it’s a bit like broadcasting a short email to all and sundry. For us obviously business is life so how do you tweet business, do we just endlessly repeat our name in the vain hope that this gets picked up by Google and then raises our ranking. It all feels a bit like a monkey tapping for the sake of tapping saying nothing.
